there's a song i heard once, while showering, in 2019, on a music application i no longer use, which was streaming out songs at random. It had a really strong, thumping rhythm. i think it was fast enough you coulda done CPR to it, or maybe just slightly slower. all i remember of the lyrics was that it said once, or perhaps several times "on a row-boat" thump thump thump thump thump (👈 the quick rhythm). it had that kind of alt, indie, folksy feeling to it that a lot of music i listened to then (and now) had. sorta like Blitzen Trapper
when i heard it in the shower i had that odd sort of "i don't like this song now, but if i hear it again i'll probably start to like it" feeling that happens to me fairly frequently. i made a note to myself to look at the recently played songs on the application, and write that one down, and to listen to it again because why not enjoy music! why not!
well, i was showering to get ready for class. i left. i forgot to check. the song has vanished into the cracks of digital algorithms that have probably been replaced and retooled several times over by this point. as i remember it, i start remembering my memory of it, recalling not the original listening of it, but my recollection of recalling remembering listening to it, and the fragment of song i have, no matter how small, gets more distorted, gently warped to accommodate my musical taste (which is itself, impermanent, ever-changing) more and more over time.
THIS is only notable because every time i tell friends and family about this song, the reaction is nearly unanimously "oh, let me try finding it" and various music apps are searched for any song mentioning a row boat in any capacity. a few months ago, i told my family, and we spent an hour after dinner where everyone took turns playing songs which mentioned row boats (some very good) while i listened for a moment before saying, over and over "no—it Thumps. the song Thumps."
and it has occurred to me that at some point, the song will be lost to me entirely (which is not a huge loss! i did not like the song Yet. i only felt the potential to like it, the same way I feel about New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down by LCD Soundsystem) either because i have forgotten it entirely, or because my memory has created a new song which i like a little more, but which has never existed, so that if somebody ever properly found the song and played it for me, or I came across it myself, i might only passingly consider its familiarity before dismissing it as pale imitation, perhaps inspired by the Definitely much better song i am looking for (which does not fully exist, even in my own head.)

making money from a queer couple that you’ve teased for years at this point while simultaneously canonizing multiple het couples & hiding behind the excuse of slow burn is textbook queerbaiting btw. definitions expand with the movement of media: crwby + rooster teeth are not queer creatives that have to fight homophobic networks for representation to be made.
glad we had this talk fndm.

Nearly five years ago, an intelligent, impassioned man by the name of Jon Stewart spoke on behalf of all 9/11 responders to a representative - and partial - panel of congressmen. It was strong. It was sad. It was damning. And it was telling. Watch it:
youtube
At the time - the latter half of the Trump presidency - Mitch McConnell was the Republican Majority Leader in the Senate...
McConnell was notorious for his uncompromising actions on issues that bolstered Republican stances and thwarted all others. And the 9/11 responders were Not. His. Problem...
Are you still reading this?
At the 5:50 mark of Stewart's address, Jon singles out a Mr Johnson - who is currently Speaker of the House Mike Johnson - for belittling the issue, for blowing them off, and for doing nothing, which was how all Republicans were falling in line at the time...
In terms of actual work for the good of the people, Mike Johnson was singled out for his do-nothing demeanor back then, just as he has proven himself to be do-nothing today. And Jon Stewart just continues to be prescient!
Stewart's speech worked wonders, eighteen YEARS after 9/11, and after the matter spent most of the Trump presidency getting absolutely no consideration at all...
It's been five years since then, and they - like Jon - keep telling us who they are!
[EDIT] I'm changing my tags. Instead of using mostly keywords from what is written, I'm going to experiment with tags that maybe share some appeal. Wish me luck!

Had one of those moments of knowing how Yukari Yakumo must feel about 50% of the time tonight.
You put in obvious, silly jokes, and yet people *still* take your little diagrams that break the 4th wall seriously...

if that abusive gremlin thinks that he could face Kendrick and win he’s dead wrong, didn’t he learn anything from this year? Like his boyfriend Drake got demolished by Kendrick this year, if I were that baldie I’d just back off.
And what does he mean when he say he wishes somebody would come after him? Like dude they already came after you ….five years ago that’s why you’re still in jail for seven more years. You wanna be all gangster, but real gangsters don’t shoot and abuse women… cause a real gangster would have done to you what Will Smith did to Chris Rock at the Oscars back in 2022
As in slap you in the face . Hard. Only not with an open hand.

The Return of the Banana Peel: A Slippery Saga
Five years ago, I penned a post about the underestimated power of the banana peel—yes, that comedic trope of yore that has sent many a cartoon character flying. Back then, I mused on how life has a way of tossing these metaphorical peels into our path, forcing us to slip, slide, and often fall flat on our faces. Ah, the good ol’ days of thinking that a banana peel was the worst fate one could…

Not to be controversial, but if the only interesting thing in the book(movie/TV show etc.) is the plot twists, and the book(movie/TV show etc.) is ruined by knowing what happens, the book(movie/TV show etc.) is probably not that great to begin with. (comment courtesy of @black-rose-writings)
.
If you don't re-read books then how can you experience the joy of going "oh fuck" as you find every bit of foreshadowing, every dropped hint? How can you appreciate the work that went into setting up the big reveal if you don't view it all over again with foreknowledge? My favourite books are the ones better on the re-read. Plus like, sometimes I just enjoy a story, knowing the ending doesn't stop me enjoying the build up. And even if it's not that special joy of finding something in the first ten pages that sets up the ending, like, knowing what's going to happen can actually make it more exciting. (comment courtesy of @hedge-rambles)
.
Also sometimes you need the comfort of knowing what happens, the familiarity is the point. Or perhaps the first read meant that you retained the basic story but the re-read gave you insights that you just couldn't have had the first time. Or the book hasn't changed but you have and your take away from it is something so profoundly different that you can't believe you didn't see it before, but how could you without the context of your experiences? I love re-reading books. (comment courtesy of @bumblebeesofttoy)
I am a much different person that I was just, what, five years ago? So yeah, revisiting media and seeing how my interaction with it has changed is really fun. Something something viewing the self through the interaction with something else
.
YOU know what happens. I’VE already forgotten as soon as i close the book (comment courtesy of @wolphinmaybe)
relatable. mind like a sieve
.
me rereading that one fanfic that literally made me want to keep living lol (comment courtesy of @mylabyrinthworld)
I love rereading fanfic, and it feels extra special to reread the fics that have impacted my life or my self-perception in a major way
.
I feel exactly the same! My favorite thing to do is to pick one of my favorite characters and then re-read a bunch of the canon and a bunch of fanfiction. I especially like re-reading the canon out of order, so it's like I'm time traveling through canon with my favorite character! .... is that just me? ... I also enjoy re-reading my own fanfiction. Especially if it's something I wrote, say, ten years ago. It feels like time travel. (comment courtesy of @andtheny)
I also think its really fun to read my own fanfiction! Like, wow, I sure said a thing back then
.
#I cannot reread or rewatch anything unless I have someone with me to share the experience with. I just can't do it otherwise, I get annoyed, my brain really doesn't like it, no matter how much I like a book it just always gets annoyed, so usually I have to forget first as no one I know would like to be read to. (comment courtesy of @sleet-cat)
.
i personally can't reread a book until I've sufficiently forgotten the details of the plot. if I know exactly what happens next, I'll never finish the book because I'm bored while reading it. I don't know if this is normal but when I'm bored, I don't push through, I avoid the source of boredom by finding something more entertaining to fill my time. for example, if I'm bored in class, I'll end up shutting down and losing more instruction because my attention must be kept without losing it or I can't restart paying attention. (comment courtesy of @calechipconecrimes)
Relatable. For better or for worse, tho, my memory is substantially worse than it used to be so, uh, that's no longer a high bar to clear 😅
People who don't re-read books are so funny to me. "I know what happens"..?? Gurl I know what pizza tastes like, still gonna eat another one. I know what a rainbow looks like, you think that'll stop me running outside, camera in hand, to see the next one?

On government shutdowns and border security concerns. And history...
Just a little more than five years ago - and just a few short months prior to Jon Stewart taking Congress to task on behalf of the 9-11 first responders - Colorado Senator Michael Bennett took to the floor of his chamber to call out Senator Ted Cruz - and rightfully so! - for Ted's and his party's "crocodile tears" over the plight of the first responders...
This was in the second half of the Trump presidency with a lot of other controversy happening at the same time. Michael details a lot of it in his speech in the video that follows. To recap in advance...
Congress was in the midst of the 2018-2019 shutdown - the longest in its history - which Trump would proudly and repeatedly claim as of his own doing. It also followed the failure, in Republican hands, of a large, drawn out border security package from the previous summer. All of which, again, Senator Bennett points out. And then some!

Are you still reading this?
One of the first things that Trump and the Republicans did after the 2016 election was to shut out Democrats and ram through a penciled-up $2 TRILLION tax break for the ultra wealthy, including a 14% cut to corporate taxes...
How much of a tax savings have YOU had?
